Ciroapp score

4.0/ 5

LifterLMS turns a WordPress site into a full course platform with memberships, quizzes, certificates, and on-site checkout, and it's proven at scale with millions of recorded enrollments. The trade-off is self-hosting: you handle maintenance, and add-on costs can climb toward $24,942 a year. Overall, it's a strong pick if you're already comfortable with WordPress.

Pros

  • Pros:Runs on your own WordPress install, so course content, student records, and revenue are not locked into a vendor-hosted platform
  • Pros:Combines course delivery, memberships, quizzes, certificates, and checkout in one plugin, reducing dependence on multiple disconnected tools
  • Pros:Proven at scale, with over 8.3 million enrollments and 12.5 million completed courses and lessons recorded across sites using it

Cons

  • Cons:You are responsible for hosting, backups, updates, and performance, which adds operational work compared with hosted course platforms
  • Cons:Total cost can climb as you extend functionality; the documented price range reaches $24,942 per year at the top end
  • Cons:Design and student experience depend on your chosen WordPress theme and stack, so results vary more than with a fixed hosted product
Best for
  • Independent instructors and coaches who already run a WordPress site and want to sell courses and memberships from their own domain
  • Small businesses and training teams that need a branded portal with quizzes, certificates, and progress tracking for employees or clients
  • Bloggers and content publishers adding a monetized course catalog to an established WordPress audience

What is LifterLMS?

LifterLMS turns a standard WordPress site into a full learning platform, handling course authoring, payments, and student progress tracking inside one plugin. It has been adopted worldwide, with more than 8.3 million enrollments and 12.5 million completed courses and lessons recorded across sites running it. This review looks at where it excels, where it falls short, and which buyers should consider it.

LifterLMS is a learning management system delivered as a WordPress plugin rather than a hosted SaaS product. You build structured courses from sections and lessons directly in the WordPress dashboard, mixing text, video, audio, and downloads, then sell access through built-in e-commerce and membership features. Because it lives on your own WordPress install, you retain control over your content, student data, and hosting decisions.

Should you choose LifterLMS?

Quick buyer guidance before you compare plans or click through.

Choose it if

  • Independent instructors and coaches who already run a WordPress site and want to sell courses and memberships from their own domain
  • Small businesses and training teams that need a branded portal with quizzes, certificates, and progress tracking for employees or clients
  • Bloggers and content publishers adding a monetized course catalog to an established WordPress audience
  • Agencies and developers building client course sites where full control over hosting, data, and customization is required

Skip it if

  • Teams that want a fully managed, zero-maintenance platform — a hosted SaaS LMS removes the server, update, and backup responsibilities that LifterLMS leaves to you
  • Organizations with no WordPress presence or in-house technical comfort, since setup assumes a functioning WordPress install

Next steps before buying

  1. 1Install WordPress on your hosting and add the free LifterLMS core plugin from lifterlms.com or the WordPress plugin repository
  2. 2Run the setup wizard to configure core pages, currency, and a payment gateway such as Stripe or PayPal
  3. 3Build a small pilot course with a few sections, lessons, and one quiz, then enroll a test student to verify the purchase, access, and progress flow
  4. 4Once the pilot works, add paid plans or a membership, enable certificates, and compare pricing tiers at lifterlms.com/pricing to match your budget

LifterLMS Key Features

✨ Course Builder and Content Structure

Courses are assembled from sections and lessons within the WordPress editor, so a single lesson can combine video, audio, text, and downloadable files. Drip scheduling releases content on a timeline, and prerequisites gate later lessons until earlier ones are finished. This structure keeps large course catalogs organized as your library grows.

✨ Quizzes, Certificates, and Achievements

The plugin includes quiz functionality with multiple question types, and lessons can require a passing score before students advance. Completed courses can trigger certificates and achievement badges, giving learners tangible proof of progress. These mechanics support both formal training requirements and student motivation.

✨ E-commerce and Memberships

LifterLMS supports selling individual courses, bundles, and recurring memberships, with checkout processed on your own site. Payment gateways such as Stripe and PayPal handle transactions and subscription billing, while coupons and payment plans let you run promotions without third-party tools.

✨ WordPress Integration and Extensibility

As a WordPress plugin, LifterLMS inherits the broader ecosystem of themes, page builders, plugins, and developer hooks. Official add-ons extend the core with capabilities such as advanced video handling, assignments, and group accounts. This matters if your requirements are likely to evolve beyond the base feature set.

✨ Reporting and Student Management

Administrators can track enrollments, course progress, quiz results, and revenue from the WordPress dashboard, with student records stored in your own database. Email notifications keep students and instructors informed about activity and milestones.

Use Cases

💡 Selling Self-Paced Online Courses

An independent instructor can package expertise into structured lessons, price access through the built-in checkout, and let students progress at their own pace. Quizzes and certificates add accountability, while the surrounding WordPress site handles marketing pages alongside the course catalog.

💡 Coaching and Membership Programs

Drip scheduling releases material on a defined timeline, and recurring membership sales let a coach deliver ongoing programming on a subscription basis. Access control is tied to membership level, so gating content by tier is straightforward.

💡 Employee and Client Training Portals

Businesses that need to train employees, resellers, or customers can run a private training portal on their own domain. Quiz pass requirements and progress reports support basic compliance-style tracking without a separate enterprise LMS contract.

💡 Extending an Existing WordPress Site

Organizations already publishing on WordPress can add a course catalog without migrating platforms. Existing content, SEO equity, and audience carry over, and courses can cross-link naturally with blog posts and landing pages.

Why use LifterLMS?

If your site already runs on WordPress, LifterLMS lets you add a complete training business on infrastructure you control instead of paying recurring fees to a hosted course platform. It combines course delivery, memberships, assessments, and checkout in one place, reducing the number of disconnected tools you have to maintain.

Its adoption scale — millions of recorded enrollments — also signals a mature product with a long operational track record rather than an untested newcomer.
